How to choose suitable socks from fabrics?

September 30,2021

The feet sweat easily during exercise. If the socks do not absorb sweat, the feet will become sticky and uncomfortable. As a result, the socks will become dry, but the feet are wet and smelly, which becomes the best breeding ground for bacteria. If you want to keep your feet dry, the material selection of socks becomes very important. Moisture absorption and perspiration are the key points. It is better if you can take into account the antibacterial properties.

So, when it comes to fabrics, are pure cotton socks the best?

polyester socks

Cotton

For socks, cotton is the most mainstream fabric. Generally speaking, the better cotton yarn is used, the more comfortable the socks will be.

But cotton socks are not necessarily really good! Because natural cotton yarn has poor elasticity, it is necessary to blend a certain proportion of polyester fiber if you want socks to wear comfortably and have good weather resistance.

Labeling 100% cotton socks is a misunderstanding: socks cannot be 100% cotton. Some polyester fiber must be added to the socks to make the socks elastic, but the cotton fiber in the socks accounts for the majority.

According to national regulations, a cotton content of 60% can be called pure cotton socks. If the cotton content reaches 95%, it can be called 100% cotton. Socks that claim to have a 100% cotton content in the specialty store are more than 90%.

Wool

Wool is another common material. It is characterized by excellent heat retention, but it is relatively expensive and harder to dry when wet.

Generally used as home socks, suitable for the southern winter climate.

Polyester fiber

Polyester fibers, such as nylon, spandex, polyester... They are characterized by good elasticity, but poor sweat absorption performance, and some will produce peculiar smell. Therefore, it is not recommended to wear socks made of high proportion of polyester fiber (except stockings, because there is no better way).

But a certain proportion (such as 5%-10%) of polyester fiber blended in cotton or wool is necessary. Generally speaking, the quality of socks made of spandex/lycra blended will be better.

Modal

A textile fiber that is very popular in recent years belongs to the viscose category. Developed by Lenzing Company, it is made of European beech through beating and spinning.

The fabric processed and finished with modal fiber on cotton and polyester has silk-like luster, good drape, soft and smooth hand feeling. Modal is added to the ingredients of the socks, which can make the socks feel softer and more comfortable. It is also a very popular textile in recent years, but its ability to absorb sweat is relatively weak.

Other common materials

For example, silk and bamboo fibers are smooth and shiny, but have poor abrasion resistance; some high-tech fabric fibers specially developed for sports scenes may have better sweat-conducting properties.
